Courses for adults November 2008
 
    Chesterfield College are offering a wide range of Gateway courses for adults from January. The course are aimed at adults who are looking to gain a first qualification since leaving school. They include:  
   
electrical installation
plumbing
art and design
nail technology
exercise and fitness, and
hospitality and catering.

National Minimum Wage September 2008
 
    The new rates from 1 October will be:  
   
young people between 16 and 17        £3.53 an hour
young people between 18 and 21        £4.77 an hour, and
adults- 22 years and over                       £5.73 an hour.
 
    If you need help and advice - call the National Minimum wage helpline on 0845 6000 678. The helpline is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and the service is provided in 30 different languages.

Looking for a new direction? August 2008
 
    Adult Directions is an upgraded version of Careersmatch - which it replaces - and offers a number of additional features, including the opportunity to match skills to job ideas as well as interests. We have found that many adults who have used Adult Directions via the CD-Rom have found it has helped them to start thinking about possible career ideas that might suit them.  
    To get started, click on the Adult Directions button on the home page and enter your postcode and the first line of your address and off you go. All Derbyshire postcodes and those up to a radius of 5 miles surrounding Derbyshire will be recognised.

    This is a new guide that brings together all the information on different types of financial help for learning and training. There are a number of sections in the guide such as:

Leap Ahead August 2008
 
    The Leap Ahead initiative can offer you a one-to-one advice session, if you already have a level 2 or 3 qualification, and are thinking about higher education as part of your career ideas. The advice session will be with a nextstep adviser and can help you to:  
   
identify and develop your skills
look ahead to future employment opportunities, and
find flexible courses to suit you.

Adult Learning Grant - ALG JuNE 2008
 
    The ALG is a means tested weekly allowance of up to £30 available to anyone aged 19 plus studying for their first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification. Applicants must be resident in England and be in full-time learning.  
    The grant is intended to help meet the additional costs of learning, including books, equipment and travel costs as a result of attending a course. To get an ALG application form, you will need to contact the student’s services team at the college you are thinking of starting a course with.
